Carmel
Building & Design currently has nine Certified Green Building
Professionals (CGBP) on staff. This means that we have completed
an intensive two-day course through Build It Green, a non-profit
organization that has developed the preeminent California
residential green building standards that are being adopted by
various municipalities. The City of Monterey just passed their
Green Building Ordinance based on the GreenPoint Rated
Checklist, and we are ready to build your house to meet or
exceed these criteria.
Our Safety Officer is very committed to jobsite and employee
safety, and works diligently to see that Carmel Building &
Design’s practices are compliant with OSHA standards. We comply
fully with workers compensation insurance laws and are
fully insured. This reduces the chance of jobsite accidents and
greatly reduces the amount of homeowner liability.
The efforts of our Green Projects Coordinator have yielded a
constantly evolving database of green practices, products,
suppliers, and subcontractors. As she interacts with the local
building community, the database continues to grow. Thank you to
all of our open-minded and progressive suppliers and
subcontractors!
Workshop Series: We have established a monthly in-house
training/workshop series designed to increase our crew’s
knowledge and awareness of various building science and
efficiency (resource/water/energy) issues. All staff members are
encouraged to take turns teaching the sessions, which is a
proven way to gain a deeper understanding of a topic. One of our
kick-off classes was all about ‘green’ building.
To supplement our Workshop Series, we provide constant
opportunities for learning. Appropriate and relevant articles
are distributed bi-weekly. We are also kicking off a new
internal Math Certification Program. After carefully selecting a
straightforward and practical resource for the type of math
required for construction, we implemented free courses to help
strengthen our crew's math skills. Special awards are given to
graduates of this program. We believe that it also decreases the
time and material waste on site.
Our
entire company toured the first Educational Campus to achieve
LEED Platinum (USGBC standard), located right here in Monterey
County. Thank you to the Chartwell School for opening its campus
up to visitors to see a living example of the future of
building.

Because of amazing local programs put on through PG&E and AMBAG,
we were able to request a course on Advanced Framing for Energy
Efficiency to come to our area. Our entire company and our
favorite engineer attended this full-day workshop so we can
improve our building practices. Thank you!
